5,000 Feet Is the Best
The cinematic video work addresses one of the most urgent subjects of contemporary politics and visual culture:
drone surveillance and drone warfare, and the remote operation of unmanned aircraft by pilots located far from the sites of conflict.
The book approaches Fast’s work as both an artwork and a point of departure for a broader discussion. Its concentration on one film allows for a close reading of Fast’s artistic practice while also opening onto the political, ethical, aesthetic, and human questions raised by the subject matter.
Following the structure of Fast’s film, the publication brings together narrative, documentary, critical, and research-based materials. Essays and analyses are placed alongside the artist’s script and research documents, as well as film stills. Additional responses by writers, theorists, artists, and practitioners from different fields expand the discussion into a wider forum on visibility, distance, responsibility, violence, and the mediated experience of war.
