Aernout Mik is among the most influential artists working with video today. His installations operate at the intersection of film, video, performance, sculpture, and architecture,

forming immersive environments in which moving images are embedded within spatial and social structures. Mik’s work consistently addresses conditions of collective experience, focusing on phenomena such as financial crisis, economic depression, racism, and social unrest.

Communitas brings together key works from the past twelve years. Rather than offering explanatory narratives or solutions, these installations deconstruct social and political situations by suspending clear causality and destabilizing familiar patterns of behavior. Mik’s works stage moments of uncertainty and transition, proposing new ways of perceiving collective dynamics without resolving them into fixed meanings.

Born in Groningen, the Netherlands, in 1962, Aernout Mik lives and works in Amsterdam. His installations have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions and are held in major public collections. In 2007, he represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale.
