Rather than treating autobiography as a stable narrative of identity, the publication approaches it as a performative and fragmented form.
Autobiographies was published in 2006 by Revolver, tranzit, and the Vienna Secession. The publication accompanied a series of exhibitions developed in three “acts”: I Narrow Focus at tranzit in Bratislava, I Já at Futura Gallery in Prague, and Ich I Performative Ontology at the Vienna Secession. The catalogue was edited by Vít Havránek and Vjera Borozan and brings together artistic positions concerned with the construction, staging, and instability of the self.
The artists included examine how the “I” is produced through images, gestures, documents, memories, roles, and social situations. Autobiography appears less as confession than as a field of negotiation between personal experience, artistic fiction, political context, and public representation.
The catalogue includes works by artists such as Bas Jan Ader, Johanna Billing, Pavel Braila, Omer Fast, and Fiorenza Menini, among others. Through photography, video, performance, text, and conceptual strategies, the publication reflects on the ways in which subjectivity is constructed, narrated, displaced, and repeatedly re-enacted.
