John Smith’s films unfold at the intersection of conceptual art, structural film, and documentary practice, drawing consistently on his own life and immediate surroundings.

In his new film Being John Smith, which also lends its title to the exhibition at the Secession, image, voice, and text interweave in an autobiographical meditation on nothing less than the meaning of art and existence itself.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication featuring an essay by the film scholar and critic Erika Balsom, as well as a conversation between John Smith and the curator Jeanette Pacher. Bookmarks made from cut-ups of an analogue film reel – a copy of The Black Tower – constitute the artistic intervention.

John Smiths Filme entfalten sich am Kreuzungspunkt von Konzeptkunst, strukturellem Film und Dokumentarfilm und beziehen sich auf sein eigenes Leben und unmittelbares Umfeld. In dem neuen Film Being John Smith, der auch der Ausstellung in der Secession den Titel gibt, sind Bild, Stimme und Text zu einer autobiografischen Betrachtung verwoben, in der es um nicht weniger geht als um den Sinn der Kunst und des Lebens selbst. Die Ausstellung wird von einer Publikation begleitet, die einen Essay der Filmwissenschaftlerin und -kritikerin Erika Balsom sowie ein Gespräch zwischen John Smith und der Kuratorin Jeanette Pacher enthält. Lesezeichen aus Schnipseln einer analogen Filmrolle – einer Kopie von The Black Tower – bilden die künstlerische Intervention.
