California Dreaming
Rare BookPaul Jasmin often found his models through students at the college where he teaches in Pasadena, while others are the children of close friends
whom he has watched grow up over time. In his photographs, he seeks to capture the inner worlds and unspoken dreams carried by his subjects.
“It is when I see their faces that I long to photograph them. That is my fantasy life. They keep me dreaming.”Most of the images were taken in and around his apartment on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, in a building once acquired by William Randolph Hearst as a private retreat for Marion Davies. The photographs convey Jasmin’s deep emotional attachment to California—its flawless weather, clear light, and culture of aspiration—as well as the inspiration he draws from close, sustained encounters with young people.
Born in Helena, Montana, in 1935, Paul Jasmin lives and works in Los Angeles, where he teaches at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His previous book Hollywood Cowboy was published in 2002. In addition to his artistic work, he has been a regular contributor to magazines including L’Uomo, Vogue, Teen Vogue, W, Vogue Homme, Jane, and Interview.
