This book is aimed at tracing a connection between the architecture of the Albanian tradition and the informal nature of the spontaneous transformations of contemporary Tirana. The attempt to establish a link between the opposing features of functionalist formalism, typical of the city that grew during the totalitarian regimes, and those of the informal architecture, which represent the constructive freedom of recent times aims to provide a critical interpretation that is applicable to recent interventions for the recovery of the existing built heritage.

“Calls for more Blackness in architecture schools can be simplistic,” writes architect Darell Wayne Fields, guest editor of Log 57. Well-meaning equity and inclusion programs often simply “associate the mere presence of Black bodies with institutional change.” In Log 57, a 208-page thematic issue titled Black is . . . an’ Black ain’t . . ., 29 authors explore the complexities of Blackness as it relates to aesthetics and architectural pedagogy. Minimal Art seemed harmless: just a few hard-edged, greyish pieces of metal laid on the ground, some bricks aligned a certain way, heaps of logs. Minimal Art looked unnecessarily stubborn and a bit stupid, but nobody would ever have thought it could do any harm.
