The Automaton is based on a story told to Paolo Ventura as a child. It centres on an elderly, Jewish watchmaker living in the Venice ghetto in 1943, one of the darkest periods of the Nazi occupation and the rule of the fascist regime in Italy. The city where the watchmaker has lived his entire life, now desolate and fearful, is the stage on which the story unfolds. The old man decides to build an automaton (a robot), to keep him company while he awaits the arrival of the fascist police who will deport the last of the remaining Jews from the ghetto.

Diese Objektassemblagen des 1920 in Wien als Kurt Steinwedner geborenen Curt Stenvert präsentierten sich in guter Nachbarschaft mit Künstlern wie Arman, Daniel Spoerri, Marcel Duchamp, Yves Klein, Paul Van Hoeydonck oder Robert Rauschenberg.

Der österreichische Konzept- und Medienkünstler Norbert Pfaffenbichler beschäftigt sich mit der grotesken und unheimlichen Seite der Moderne. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die Leitmedien des 20. Jahrhunderts, Film und Fotografie, die er mithilfe aktueller digitaler Produktionsmittel auf ihre heutige Wirksamkeit und Gültigkeit hin untersucht. Sein Interesse gilt vor allem der Verräumlichung zweidimensionaler Bilder, etwa wenn er mit Phänomenen arbeitet, die auftreten, wenn (Bewegungs-)Bilder im dreidimensionalen Raum präsentiert werden.

In einem Bild- und-Wort-Tagebuch hat sie diese Eindrücke festgehalten, die einen SZENENWECHSEL suggerieren.

In his work, he strives towards a visual short circuit: he manipulates perception at the level of its unconscious reflexes. The after images that are generated after perceiving shapes and colors play a central part in his work. He combines image with after image: when they are squeezed together into a simultaneous presence, an unbearable pressure results. Reality and illusion seem to be projected interactively on the canvas through the eye. This way, what takes place within us is made perceptible outside us, so he plays a game with the border between perceptible reality and projection.

Books all over the globe are scanned for preservation and communication purposes, but this archiving process is not without its consequences: images fade, unexpected colours appear, folded pages are not unfolded while being scanned, personal notes become part of the original. These books, and arguably knowledge and history, are reshaped and deformed. Lapon d’une Renne, Voyages into the Arctic Regions explores the archives of the World Wide Web, and examines the history of Arctic exploration. It can be read as a critique on the digitisation of knowledge, but at the same time the book is also a celebration of the illegible outcomes of these digital processes.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents Crush, the new photographic installation by Paul Kooiker, in the Willem van der Vorm gallery. Alongside this new work the museum is showing the 2008 photo series Room Service. The artist Paul Kooiker lets the visitor peer into his installations, but he dictates the distance between the visitor and the work. His work reveals him as a past master in the art of juggling the cliché and the unexpected.
