Ai Weiwei grew up under horrible conditions, living literally underground in a burrow in the Chinese regions of Manchuria and Xinjiang. Born in 1957 in Beijing, Ai Weiwei was the son of Ai Qing, a renowned poet denounced by the Chinese Communist Party and during the Cultural Revolution forced into exile in a labour camp. Für Kunst heute steht die Kategorie „Raum" nicht nur aufgrund ihrer Relevanz für politische Debatten im Zentrum des Interesses, Mit der Reflexion auf die gesellschaftlichen Räume, an denen Kunst teilhat, ist zumeist auch eine Reflexion auf den konkreten Ausstellungsraum verbunden.

Die Ankündigung, nach zwei Heften von Texte zur Kunst zu feministischen Themen eine Ausgabe „über Männer" machen zu wollen, stieß auf ein belustigtes Echo.

Diese Ausgabe von Texte zur Kunst ist der „Abstraktion“ in modernen und zeitgenössischen künstlerischen Praktiken und ästhetischer Theorie gewidmet, und dabei sollen insbesondere die ökonomischen Bedingungen von Kunst im Mittelpunkt stehen.

"Art on Demand" fragt nach den vielfältigen Interessenstrukturen hinter der allseitigen Kunst-Validierung, geht darüber aber auch den Möglichkeiten nicht-instrumenteller Vertriebs- und Rezeptionsstrukturen nach.

Selten wurde in den letzten Jahren so nachdrücklich bewiesen, welch wichtige Funktion der öffentliche Raum für die gesellschaftspolitische Auseinandersetzung erfüllt wie in den letzten Wochen und Monaten in den arabischen Ländern. Wer hatte bisher schon eine Ahnung davon, wie zentrale Plätze in Manama/Bahrain oder Kairo heißen?

Die dritte Ausgabe der Zeitschrift "bauhaus", die von der Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau herausgegeben wird, ist den Dingen gewidmet. „Ein Ding ist bestimmt durch sein Wesen“, schrieb der Bauhausgründer Walter Gropius 1925 (Quelle: Verlag).
