Die Auseinandersetzung mit Arbeit ist ein zentrales Thema der Künstlerin Katharina Gruzei. In der Serie Bodies of Work befasst sie sich mit Österreichs letzter Donau-Schiffswerft. Dort sind hochtechnologische maschinelle Fertigung und industrielle Handarbeit eng miteinander verzahnt. Mensch und Maschine erweisen sich im industriellen Schaffensprozess als perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt. Gruzei sieht den „Arbeiterkörper“ in diesem Zusammenhang als „Verhandlungsort für die stets aktuellen Diskurse um den Stellenwert und die Veränderung von Arbeit.“

Durch die intensive visuelle Konfrontation mit den Nicht-Orten Wiens, die in unlustbetonter Erregung anspruchs- sowie zeitlos verharren, eröffnet »Da letzte Schmäh« eine neue Perspektive auf den Stadtkörper und seine Bewohner.

In Wien und Paris galt d’Ora einst als angesehene Porträtistin der Reichen und Mächtigen, der Schönen und Berühmten. Unter dem nationalsozialistischen Regime verlor die Fotografin Familie, Status und Besitz. Diese bittere Erfahrung der Entwurzelung lenkte ihren Blick auf Menschen am Rand der Gesellschaft.

In Costa Rica Time Warp zeigen sich Kinder, denen Ludwig Thalheimer begegnete, als er sich 1986 in Costa Rica aufhielt. Er traf sie an öffentlichen Orten, auf den Straßen, wo sie Zeitungen verkauften, Autos wuschen, in den Verkaufsständen ihrer Eltern mithalfen.

„Nähern Sie sich dem Gegenstand“ – Satz 1 in Lotte Lyons Buch der Zeichnungen, Installationen und Fotografien, die von den Sätzen Franz Thalmairs begleitet werden. Sie führen den Betrachter leise zu einem bewussten, strukturierten Sehen und Agieren.

Für ihr Projekt “Indirect Interviews with Women” hat die Karina Nimmerfall im Mass Observation Archive der Universität Sussex recherchiert und Interviews ausgewählt, die im Jahr 1941 – während der Bombardierung Londons – mit Frauen über deren Lebenssituation, ihre Wünsche und Hoffnungen für die Zeit nach dem Krieg geführt wurden.

Mit Blitz und Enzianblau legt Manfred Willmann – nach Schwarz und Gold (Graz 1981) und Das Land (Salzburg 2000) – sein drittes profundes Künstlerbuch vor, aufgebaut aus Arbeiten aus dem Jahr 2005. Konzentrierte Nahsichten, Bilderreihen von Landschaften, Tieren, Pflanzen, Alltagsgegenständen und Porträts werden unterbrochen von Reproduktionen der Rückseite des Agfa-Fotopapiers Sensatis. Willmann hatte von seinen Aufnahmen dieses Jahres mehr als tausend analoge Prints auf diesem Material herstellen lassen, diese aber erst wieder nach etwa zehn Jahren zur Hand genommen und das vorliegende Buch daraus entwickelt.

ZEHN ist eine sensible fotografische Annäherung an Kindheit. An fast jedem Tag eines ganzen Jahres porträtierte Grit Schwerdtfeger auf dessen eigenen Wunsch hin ihren Sohn Lorenz, damals zehn Jahre alt. Die Langzeitstudie in verdichteter Form gibt nicht nur Einblick in die Entwicklung eines Kindes, sondern erzählt auch von der Beziehung zwischen Sohn und Mutter.

Ein ungewöhnlicher Künstler mit einem sagenhaften WerkZweifelsohne ist der 1971 geborene Darren Almond einer der herausragenden englischen Gegenwartskünstler; das beginnt mit seiner Teilnahme 1997 an der legendären Ausstellung Sensation, dem Start der Young British Artists, führt 2003 in den Pavillon der Biennale von Venedig und 2005 zur Nominierung für den Turner Prize.

Das Interesse der österreichischen Fotografin Gisela Erlacher, die u.a. Kamera in Wien studiert hat, gilt hybriden, improvisierten urbanen Situationen. A hybrid attempt at coming to terms with a specific instance of amnesia amongst the West German left in the late 1970s/early 1980s, Harun Farocki’s 1982 feature film BEFORE YOUR EYES – VIETNAM combines ideas about the distant, image-guided participation in the war in Vietnam with speculations on Vietnam as a laboratory of advanced modes of capitalist production, whilst reflecting intensely on the dyad of love and work.
