I spent more than two months alone on a bicycle, travelling along the perimeter of the Italian peninsula, and then two weeks cycling around Sardinia. I put together hundreds of images of horizons which, day after day, came to form a chromatic stave of seas and skies. Finally, from the confines of my studio, image after image, I pieced back together a fair part of the Italian skyline. (A.R.)

Das neue Künstlerbuch von Iris Andraschek zeigt die selbstbestimmte naturnahe und alternative Lebensform einer Gruppe von Menschen in Canada. Die 2002 und 2010 entstandenen Bilder changieren zwischen Realtät und Fiktion und zeigen eine fast märchenhafte Communitas als utopischen Gegenentwurf zu den Zwängen der Industriegesellschaften mit ihren Arbeits-, Freizeit- und Konsumregimes . Die Serie aus dem Jahr 2002 ist während einer Residency in Durham, Ontario entstanden. Im Jahr 2010 ist die Künstlerin nochmals dorthin gereist um diese Arbeit zu vollenden und einige Protagonist_innen und den Ort in einer gewissen zeitlichen Distanz noch einmal zu fotografieren.

In tracing some of the notions and narratives embedded in Chapters, a 16 mm film shot in Cyprus in 2012, the idea of making a book came about as an exercise, or rather an experiment, to deconstruct the film into some of its subject matters. Embarking on a new set of associations between image and subject, source and information, meaning and abstraction, this book is both a document and a memory map, tracing the beginnings of a thought, a time, an image, a place.

In 2012 Simon Starling presented Black Drop, a film about the transit of Venus observations and their relationship to early Cinema. Predicated on the idea that the 2012 transit may be the last to be recorded on celluloid (the next transit will occur in 2117), Black Droptracks the development of the French astronomer Jules César Janssen’s innovative “photographic revolver”, a device designed to counter human error in timing the crucial moments of Venus’ contact with the edge of the sun. The device was influential in the development of the Lumiére brothers’ cinematograph.Together with a small film crew, Starling travelled to Hawaii and Tahiti to observe and film the 2012 transit of Venus, and the sites of previous observations and photo-documentation (Point Venus, Tahiti and Honolulu). The recording of the event formed the basis for the production of a film about the relationship between the transit of Venus and the history of cinema, as framed by the parenthesis formed by the 1874 and 2012 transits.
