Christine Sun Kim. Draw a Blank – Blank ziehen is the first monograph on Christine Sun Kim and was published in connection with her exhibition Cues on Point at the Vienna Secession.

The publication brings together drawing, notation, language, and mediation in an open book format. It takes as its point of departure Kim’s drawings of musical staff lines, which remain deliberately blank. This emptiness does not indicate absence, but opens a space for translation, projection, and voice.

Kim understands the blank staff lines as a homage to sign language interpreters and to people who have spoken on her behalf. In doing so, the book touches on central questions in her work: Who speaks for whom? How can sound, language, and meaning be made visible? And how does communication change when it moves between body, writing, sign, and image?

With contributions by artists, musicians, writers, dancers, and activists, the publication expands Kim’s practice into a collective space of resonance. The perforated pages can be removed and used for one’s own notations. Draw a Blank – Blank ziehen is therefore not only a monograph, but also an artistic intervention, a score, an archive, and an invitation to continue.
