Wenn Jacques Rancière zu kurzen Reisen ins Land des Volkes einlädt, dann steht keine folkloristische Idylle auf dem Programm, sondern das Überdenken der Verhältnisse zwischen den Bildern und dem Wissen, der Utopie und der Wirklichkeit, der Literatur und der Politik.

Mit seiner Installation »The Story of the Lion«, die auf der Biennale Venedig 1999 ausgezeichnet wurde, ist Georges Adéagbo einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit in Europa bekannt geworden. In seinen Arbeiten arrangiert der afrikanische Künstler die verschiedensten Objekte und Texte wie Bücher, Zeitschriften, Werbebroschüren, Schallplattenhüllen oder Fotografien, die einerseits aus Afrika, andererseits aus den Ländern stammen, in denen er seine Installationen realisiert.

„Die letzte Fahrt der Beagle“ versammelt Gedichte und Gedichtzyklen aus unterschiedlichen Produktionsphasen. Dem entsprechend finden sich hier vielfältige formale und thematische Zugänge, bei denen aber immer die sprachliche Reflexion im Vordergrund steht.
