This publication forms part of an ongoing group of work projects and developing ideas. It is an attempt to define research potential that may emerge from analysis of some aspects of an archive, namely the Charles Nypels Archive.
The archive resides at the JvE Academie, documentation center.

Charles Nypels (1895 – 1952) from Maastricht [NL] was a typographer, publisher, printer, author and book artist.

“One comes home tired after having worked all day and finds an uncomfortable chair.” This is the start to Bruno Munari’s considerations on the choice between aesthetics and functionality when designing furniture. To support his thesis, Munari analyses the most obvious case of the armchair.
You must have been seated on countless types of chair: very low ones, ones with a deep seat, ones with sharp edges, and so on. “But be honest : what is more restful than a tuppenny deckchair.” In Munari’s typically engaging style the great designer reminds us how we could go on inventing furniture each time fashions change when actually all that is needed is to perfect the most comfortable of the existing models, not forgetting the real purpose: comfort and durability.
To corroborate the words of Bruno Munari are the 14 photographs which accompanied the 1944 text that appeared in issue n. 202 of the magazine Domus.

In 2012 Simon Starling presented Black Drop, a film about the transit of Venus observations and their relationship to early Cinema. Predicated on the idea that the 2012 transit may be the last to be recorded on celluloid (the next transit will occur in 2117), Black Droptracks the development of the French astronomer Jules César Janssen’s innovative “photographic revolver”, a device designed to counter human error in timing the crucial moments of Venus’ contact with the edge of the sun. The device was influential in the development of the Lumiére brothers’ cinematograph.Together with a small film crew, Starling travelled to Hawaii and Tahiti to observe and film the 2012 transit of Venus, and the sites of previous observations and photo-documentation (Point Venus, Tahiti and Honolulu). The recording of the event formed the basis for the production of a film about the relationship between the transit of Venus and the history of cinema, as framed by the parenthesis formed by the 1874 and 2012 transits.

Ardan Özmenoglu (also written Ozmenoglu) is a versatile Turkish artist who works in a wide range of mediums including large-scale glass sculptures, works on Post-It® notes, photography and neon lighting. Maelstrom is a dynamic object. It shows a drawing process in a liquid medium. On closer inspection it is a sculptural process using tiny particles of a granular material that accumulate temporarily to form clusters and lines. But just moments before shapes become evident, they are overwritten or fall ¬apart and disappear. They vaporize. And although Maelstrom is very material, it travels between two realms: between what is there and what is not there.
