Navigator is Arjan van Helmond`s second solo exhibition at the gallery f a projects (23 May – 30 June, 2007), and continues van Helmond’s investigation into the ‘lived experiences of spaces’.

The empty spaces in Arjan van Helmond's paintings create a feeling of suspense, as if something may happen at any moment. This first monograph contains 50 reproductions of recent work, printed on loose sheets of paper--lending the impression of a stack of drawings that can be leafed through.

This publication documents the ceramic works of the Viennese company Brüder Schwadron, known for its distinctive tile and architectural ceramics that adorned numerous residential and commercial buildings around 1900. Accompanying the exhibition, the book includes new photographs by Lisa Rastl, historical imagery, and scholarly essays by Rainald Franz, Andreas Lehne, Kathrin Pokorny-Nagel, and Tina Zickler. At its core, the project continues an act of remembrance—tracing surviving examples of the firm’s work and acknowledging the aesthetic contribution the Schwadron family made to Vienna’s urban culture. The company and family, both of Jewish origin, were destroyed under the Nazi regime. This volume forms part of an ongoing, participatory research initiative aimed at re-inscribing these erased histories into the city’s cultural memory.
