Den "Topographien der Seele" waren Paolo Bianchi und seine Mitautoren in Werken der Art Brut und Outsider-Kunst auf der Spur. Gestoßen sind sie auf Manifestationen vitaler, ursprünglicher Kräfte, die wir alle in der Seele tragen. Eine Kunst, die zwischen Innenwelt und Außenwelt angesiedelt ist, aber oft auch den Bruch des Einklangs beider Welten dokumentiert.

Emblem, Wort und Schrift sind in der Kunst wieder zu aktueller Bedeutung gelangt. "Theater der Embleme" meint die Wiederkehr dieses Kunstparadigmas. Dabei bedient sich die Kunst heute der allegorischen Darstellung, der Personifikation, ebenso wie des exponierten Wortes. Sie rekurriert auf das politische Emblem ebenso wie auf das Warenemblem.

So viel Datensammlung war nie. Im Zeitalter computergestützter Datenbanksysteme scheinen die Möglichkeiten der Aufzeichnung und Speicherung von Informationen schier unbegrenzt zu sein. Und tatsächlich werden sie eifrig genutzt: alles wird aufbewahrt, abgespeichert - man könnte ja noch einmal darauf zurückgreifen müssen. Nur: so einfach ist das nicht.

Was hat es mit dem Stöhnen ob des "schnöden Marktinteresses" auf sich, das an vielen Stellen der Kunstszene zu vernehmen ist? Sind die Mechanismen des Marktes solche, dass es letztlich gleich ist, ob man einen Gebrauchtwagen oder einen Picasso verkauft?

Der Körper war das zentrale Thema der 100jährigen Biennale 1995 in Venedig (siehe Band 131, 1995). In einer durch ihre Materialfülle beeindruckenden enzyklopädischen Schau wurde dort die Kunst-Geschichte der letzten 100 Jahre unter diesem Aspekt vorgeführt und teilweise in Parallele gesetzt zu den Untersuchungen der Wissenschaft.

In der Überzeugung, dass sich eine Gesellschaft und so auch ihre Kunst erst in der Einstellung zu den Randzonen als Ganze enthüllen, richtet OUTSIDE USA II den Blick auf Kunstäußerungen außerhalb der gängigen Kunstkanäle, des Mainstreams und des Establishments.

Für Sven Drühl und Oliver Zybok war es „ja wohl nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis sich KUNSTFORUM auch des Sports angenommen hat. Schließlich sollte die Bedeutung massenkultureller Phänomene wie des Sports für die Kunst nicht unterschätzt werden.“

Diese von Heinz-Norbert Jocks herausgegebene Dokumentation, versteht sich als Bestandsaufnahme, ja als exemplarischer Überblick auf die stark gewandelte Situation der Homosexuellen in westlichen Gesellschaften.
