The open studio structure, which enables students to work on the same topics from their first term up to their graduation, creates dynamics, which would not be possible at this scale in a conventional study structure.

Hans Schabus' works are immediately related to a spatial thinking and experience; his sculptures and interventions often refer directly to the artist's mental and physical surroundings, especially to his atelier and the material to be processed there. The place where art is created is investigated in terms of its analogy potential with respect to life. The works can be read as a meditation on the creative act, its aspirations, but also on the difference from everyday activity. The film works that deal with traveling, speed and non-goal-oriented movement refer to the significance of an interdisciplinary reflection for art.

Every object tells a story. And many stories are now told through objects – it’s a zeitgeist that’s been prevalent since artists like Gordon Matta-Clark championed the stories contained in items of garbage. This narrative device is one we now see a lot, made popular by recent radio shows like ‘The History of the World in 100 Objects’ and Edmund de Vaal’s ‘The Hare With the Amber Eyes’.

AN ATLAS OF AGENDA’S is a political, social and economic atlas: informing the public about socio-political power structures and activating opportunities for the self and the commons.

Its is a yellow vinyl album made up of covers of pop songs about the sun. Aping a 1970s concept album, Cranfield and Slade present twelve songs arranged to represent a day, beginning with songs about sunrise and winding down with songs about sunsets. Tracks range from classics such as George Harrison’s "Here Comes the Sun" and The Kinks’ "Waterloo Sunset," to the lesser-known "Sun" by singer-songwriter Margot Guryan or "Where Evil Grows" by Vancouver’s The Poppy Family.

Francis Upritchard creates sculptural installations in which human figures, painted in bright colours, inhabit a world replete with found objects and everyday items, modified to meet their needs. The inhabitants and their objects are shown on specially produced or found pieces of furniture.

»Sensible Objekte« in musealen Sammlungen werden seit den achtziger Jahren als »menschliche Überreste« und »Gegenstände von religiöser Bedeutung« definiert. Dabei sind nicht nur die Gegenstände selbst »sensibel«, sondern auch und vor allem die Umstände ihrer Herstellung und Beschaffung. Im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert reisten europäische Forscher in die kolonialisierten Teile der Welt. Sie sammelten Anthropologica – Knochen, Haarproben und Präparate – und Ethnografica – Gegenstände aus der materiellen Kultur – von Angehörigen der dort lebenden sogenannten »aussterbenden Völker« und brachten sie in wissenschaftliche Sammlungen und Museen in Europa.

„Durch“ ist eine Zeitschrift, die von 1986 bis 1993 im Auftrag des Grazer Kunstvereins herausgegeben wurde.

Three Views on Salto del Agua is a book of three insightful essays on the architecturally based film, Salto del Agua, a collaborative project by conceptual artist Anton Vidokle and sound engineer Cristian Manzutto. The 10-minute Super 8 film focuses its lens on the facade of an unremarkable building in Mexico City; a public transportation station that would otherwise go unnoticed in the urban sprawl.

Die Umorientierung vom "Was" auf das "Wie" eines Tuns hat die Kulturwissenschaften erfasst, und nicht nur sie. Im Windschatten dieser an Performance, Inszenierung und Performativität geknüpften Diskussion hat auch die Performance Art neuerliche Beachtung und Aufwertung erfahren. Der sie kennzeichnende, körperlich aufführende Vollzug erhob sie zum Musterbeispiel dieser Entwicklung – allerdings nur unter Ausblendung jener Momente, die sich schlecht dazu fügen: den Beziehungen, die sie zum Bild oder Bildhaften unterhält. Ihnen widmen sich die Beiträge des Bandes: den älteren lebenden Bildern, ihren jüngeren Adaptionen in der Performance Art und ihren Implikationen für die Akteure und die Darbietung selbst.

Das Erkennen, die Deutung und die sich daran anschließende allmähliche Wertschätzung von Zeugnissen außereuropäischer Kulturen ist ein überaus spannendes Kapitel der Kunst- und Geistesgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Negerkunst, Stammeskunst, Primitive Kulturen, Kunst der Naturvölker, Erste Kunst – etwa 100 Jahre währt die Auseinandersetzung über Einflüsse anderer Kulturen auf die abendländische Moderne und die Gleichrangigkeit der Kunstbemühungen aller Menschen. Die vorliegende Aufsatzsammlung präsentiert wesentliche Beiträge und damit verschiedene Auffassungen dieser Diskussion und macht damit die Entwicklung bis in die Gegenwart sichtbar.

Hans Belting sucht in den hier versammelten Aufsätzen verschiedene Wege zur Moderne und ihren stets wechselnden Gesichtern. Im Vordergrund steht die Kunstproduktion, die immer wieder aktuelle Symbole für das Zeitgefühl der Moderne liefert. Auch die Raumexpansion der Kunst, die wir allzu rasch unter dem Stichwort der Globalisierung fassen wollen, kommt dabei zur Sprache.

Hans-Peter Feldmann arbeitet mit Fotografien und Alltagsobjekten, die er sammelt, archiviert und arrangiert und schließlich in unterschiedlichen Konstellationen nach festgelegte Kriterien immer wieder neu zusammenstellt.

Es ist an der Zeit, dass ich mich angesichts der Schreihälse, die einen schlaffen Humanismus verteidigen, zu der Frage des Allgemeinen oder Universellen äußere.

Beyond the view that multiple, globally dispersed conceptual art practices provide a heterogeneity of cultural references, Andrei Monastyrski and Collective Actions propose much more: other dimensions altogether, other spatiotemporal politics, other timescales, other understandings of matter, other forms of life—not only as works, but as a basic condition for being able to perceive artworks in the first place.
