COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. Beyond the Blue
Rare BookA highlight of the exhibition is the documentation of the spatial design developed by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU.
It illustrates the continuity and diversity of the formal vocabulary that has evolved over a 40-year period within the architects’ extensive body of work. The compelling selection includes recent urban development projects such as BMW Welt, Munich (2001–2007), the Musée des Confluences, Lyon (2001–2010), and the European Central Bank, Frankfurt am Main (2003–2011). Through photographs, renderings, plans, and drawings, readers gain insight into unrealized and completed projects, as well as construction projects still in the planning stages.
Texts by Jeffrey Kipnis, Sylvia Lavin, and Peter Noever explore the intersections of architecture with history, literature, film, and the visual arts in the work of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, offering a profound insight into the conceptual approach of these architects, who rank among the most innovative and significant of our time.
The publication was released to coincide with the exhibition of the same name, conceived specifically for the MAK Vienna (December 12, 2007–May 12, 2008), which was curated as the largest and most comprehensive museum presentation to date of the globally active architectural team with offices in Vienna and Los Angeles.
