Das magische Quadrat
Rare BookConceived as an archival box and educational toolkit, this publication offers an accessible introduction to the life and work of Arnold Schönberg.
Through facsimiles, essays, historical documents, and sound recordings, it presents Schönberg not only as a composer but also as a painter, writer, teacher, and theorist. The box invites an exploratory engagement with his work and aims to make complex aspects of his artistic practice approachable in an interactive format.
The set includes a series of books and booklets such as Christian Meyer’s biographical introduction to Arnold Schönberg, Claudia Emmenegger’s reflections on the reception of his work, and Michel Roth’s text on Schönberg as an inventor. Further contributions discuss his twelve-tone technique and its theoretical implications. Historical documents are presented as facsimiles, including Schönberg’s Kriegs-Wolken Tagebuch 1914, the text edition of the Moderne Psalmen, and a reprint of playing cards for Whist/Bridge. Additional texts address Schönberg as a teacher and examine symbolic aspects of his work.
The box also contains a CD edited by Bruno Pisek with historical recordings, musical examples, and voices from Schönberg and his contemporaries. A reconstructed puzzle object (Vexieretui) and an accompanying booklet complete the set, forming a compact “pocket museum” that presents the many dimensions of Schönberg’s artistic and intellectual practice.
