Dieter Roth, Ur-Tränenmeer
This publication centers on a key work by Dieter Roth that reflects his sustained engagement with accumulation, process, and the material transformation of images.
The project is based on a large body of drawings that Roth developed over many years, repeatedly revisiting and expanding the motif of the “Tränenmeer” (sea of tears). Through continuous variation and recombination, the work unfolds as a visual field in which repetition, density, and serial structure become central compositional strategies.
Rather than presenting a fixed image, the project emphasizes process and proliferation. Individual drawings function as fragments within a larger system, generating a dynamic visual surface in which countless small elements coalesce into a complex overall structure. In this way, the work exemplifies Roth’s broader artistic approach, in which production, multiplication, and transformation form an open-ended artistic process.
