Fingers Crossed Issue 00: Race
Fingers Crossed — Issue 00: Race presents the outcome of a research, design and workshop process led by David Loy and Frederico Paviani during the ECAL/HKDI Residency program in Hong Kong.
Over the course of the residency, interviews, personal narratives and visual materials were collected to examine horse racing as a cultural phenomenon embedded in the city’s social fabric.
Rather than approaching the subject purely as sport, the publication frames horse racing as a network of economic, familial and urban memories. Testimonies and visual fragments reflect how the racetrack intersects with everyday life, media circulation and local identity. One recollection encapsulates this personal dimension: “I remember my Uncle selling papers around those corners. My Mother sold the newspaper in the Happy Valley district. So, I remember the first time that I saw the horse jockey’s colorful silks… I was impressed.” — Circle Lo.
Through its large-format design and bilingual structure, the publication positions editorial practice as a tool for cultural observation, translating field research into a visually driven narrative framework.
