The catalog Global Joy by Lucy McKenzie, published in 2002 by Galerie Buchholz, documents the artist's solo exhibition of the same name in Cologne in 2001.
In the exhibition Global Joy, McKenzie explored the aesthetics and culture of the late Soviet Union, in particular the practice of bootleg vinyl in Leningrad during perestroika. She addressed the transformation of Western pop culture in a socialist context and examined how Western music and its visual representations were adapted and reinterpreted in a repressive environment. The artist used linocuts, collages and painting to depict these cultural translations and appropriations.
The book comprises 58 pages and is written in English and German. It contains numerous color illustrations of paintings and works, reference material, fold-out pages as well as texts and interviews with the artist. The book was designed by Yvonne Quirmbach. The book Global Joy is available in a limited edition of 800 copies and is aimed at art enthusiasts, collectors and professionals who want to explore the themes of cultural history, appropriation and visual translation.
