Handarbeit (Paperback, 1999) is an artist book by Austrian graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister, published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna.

Edited by Peter Noever, the book includes a theoretical essay by Rick Poynor and a translation by Michael Stand.

A distinctive feature is a 2 cm hole punched through all pages – a conceptual intervention that emphasizes the book as a physical object. Handarbeit reflects Sagmeister’s experimental approach to design, materiality, and meaning.

Sagmeister is considered one of the most influential graphic designers of his generation, known for his work with Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones, and David Byrne. The book combines documentary, theoretical, and formal elements and stands as an early example of Sagmeister’s artistic design practice.
