'The first-time participation at the Venice Art Biennale is a daunting prospect for any country. While other countries have participations at this venerated art institution dating back over a hundred years, one is just at the beginning. Domestic realities have to be negotiated and balanced with the expectations of an international art audience.

Mariam Haji, Waheeda Malullah and Camille Zakharia reflect very different personal experiences and contexts in a country characterized by rapid modernization, urbanization and resulting intensifying social and economic heterogeneity. Self-taught Malullah, internationally educated Haji, and nomadic Zakharia are indicative of the varied and complex experiences of being an artist in Bahrain.'
