James Welling – Metamorphosis

€ 48.00

James Welling has attracted attention in almost all areas of photography with his experimental work.

This volume, designed by Joseph Logan in close collaboration with the artist, presents a selection of Welling's work from the early 1970s to the present day.

The book reveals the conceptual foundations of his photography. It features images from the Diary/Landscape series, in which Welling brings together letters from his ancestors with the winter landscape of Connecticut, as well as the Glass House series, shot with colour filters, a photo essay on architect Philip Johnson's 1949 house; and finally a selection from the more recent photo series ‘Wyeth’ and ‘Choreograph,’ which document the photographer's interest in painting and dance.

The volume includes a conversation with the artist and a series of essays that place Welling's work in the context of American painting, discuss it from the perspective of postmodernism and authorship, and address its powerful visual language.

James Welling, who now teaches art at the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles, initially studied painting before turning to conceptual art in 1971 at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he studied under John Baldessari.
