Jordan Strafer - Loophole

€ 18.00

The publication accompanies Strafer’s film of the same title and offers insight into its development.

Strafer works primarily with video; her partly autobiographical, partly fictional works address questions of ethnic identity, gender, sexuality, class, and Americanism. A central aspect of her practice lies in the precise yet playful choreography of conflicting affects.

LOOPHOLE revolves around an affair between a criminal defence attorney and a juror during a widely publicized rape trial in Florida in the 1990s. Rather than reconstructing the trial in a conventional documentary manner, the film focuses on the affair as a possible rupture within the judicial system. In doing so, it exposes structures of power, greed, corruption, and social control.

The catalogue includes essays by Constance Debré and Kerstin Stakemeier, as well as a conversation between Aram Moshayedi and Jordan Strafer. For the publication, the artist developed a specific intervention in the form of a film poster based on the work shown in the exhibition. This resulted in a specially designed dust jacket and a limited edition of 500 posters. The publication is therefore not only an exhibition catalogue, but also extends Strafer’s filmic practice into the fields of printed matter, poster, and artist’s book. Jordan Strafer. Loophole was published in 2023 on the occasion of the exhibition LOOPHOLE at the Vienna Secession.
