knife does not cut fire
The publication documents Rivane Neuenschwander's first comprehensive solo exhibition in the German-speaking world.
Born in Brazil in 1967, the artist explores fears and hopes in her multifaceted work, vividly illustrating how they shape people and societies. Her works are characterised by a keen interest in cultural, psychological and sociological issues. The breadth of her interests is reflected in this publication: A conversation with Christiane Meyer-Stoll, which took place during the exhibition, provides an in-depth insight into her self-image as an artist, an essay by Portuguese sociologist Boaventura de Sousa Santos deals with the uncertainty between fear and hope, and the cut-up poems by writer Anna Ospelt, created in the aftermath of the exhibition, testify, like the title knife does not cut fire – knife does not cut fire –, taken from a poem by the poet Herberto Helder, testify to Neuenschwander's belief in the power of poetry, which permeates her entire work.
