Latitudes is a collage whose only constraint is to use fragments of existing texts and images and whose objective is to briefly suggest the outline of an imaginary novel.

Derek Knight is the author. Over the years, the texts he has written – art criticism, fiction, personal reflections, email messages – have formed a substantial archive. Artist Shawn Serfas experiments with gesture and sculptural forms on large canvases. His paintings are abstract yet carry the marks of physical intervention and human intention. As editor of Latitudes, Catherine Parayre selected brief excerpts from unrelated texts by Knight, arranged them so as to suggest the tentative outline of a potential novel, and associated them with details from large paintings by Serfas.

Derek Knight is an independent curator and was awarded the INCO prize for curatorial writing in support of his groundbreaking exhibition N.E. Thing Co.: the Ubiquitous Concept at Oakville Galleries in 1995. He also participates in exhibitions as a member of the duo Art Industria+.

In his paintings, Shawn Serfas is interested in environmental aesthetics, landscape, as well as issues bordering abstraction and representation. His work can be found in public and private collections across Canada, US, Europe, Hong Kong, and the Caribbean.
