Originally trained as a photographer and graphic designer, Michaël Borremans (born in 1963 in Geraardsbergen) has made a name for himself internationally with his dark drawings and enigmatic paintings.

This publication presents a unique selection of around twelve paintings, accompanied by an insightful essay. Borremans' paintings are closely interwoven with his drawings and film works; the artist operates at the interface between different media. His scenarios are full of references and allusions that offer the viewer a multitude of possible interpretations, which, however, can never be pieced together into a coherent whole. Seemingly contradictory elements such as realism and fantasy, the fleeting and the manifest, irony and disturbance flow into one another in his visual worlds, and only a narrow line separates familiar everyday reality from a bizarre dream world.
