Michael Janiszewski. Fotoarbeiten 1990–1999 / Photography 1990–1999 brings together photographic works from a decade in which Janiszewski used staging, disguise, and role-play as central means of image-making.

Gender appears not as a fixed identity, but as a performative construction: something produced through clothing, pose, bodily attitude, gaze, and photographic arrangement.

The works move beyond questions of gender staging into political, religious, and social orders. Costume and masquerade become tools through which Janiszewski makes structures of power, hierarchy, belief, and social codes visible. His photographs combine theatrical exaggeration with analytical precision; comedy, irritation, and an anarchic impulse undermine the apparent stability of the systems they depict.

The volume documents an important phase in the work of the Berlin-born artist. Through self-staging, photographic tableaux, and social observation, Janiszewski examines the roles and symbolic orders through which bodies, identities, and public life are shaped.
