Mihály Biró (1886–1948) is one of the best-known and most uncompromising Hungarian graphic artists of the early 20th century.

A socially and politically engaged artist, he pioneered a new genre in 1920: the politically motivated pictorial poster. The designer, draftsman, sculptor, and painter rose to become one of the leading commercial artists after World War I. Biró’s posters for the Social Democratic Workers’ Party and his memorable advertising designs served as models for an entire generation of graphic designers. In addition to political posters, he created posters for the business sector and the film industry, including for the UFA in Berlin. Forty-five posters from the MAK collection are illustrated here for the first time and documented in a catalog raisonné.
