myten er en tilstand (“the myth is a state”) accompanies Alexander Tovborg’s solo exhibition at Galleri Nicolai Wallner in Copenhagen in 2015.

The exhibition presented a group of paintings depicting the Greek mythological figure Prometheus, repeated across a series of works together with a sculptural element.

Starting from mythology, religion and historical narratives, Tovborg develops a visual language built from recurring symbols and archetypal figures. By revisiting these inherited stories, he examines how myth functions within contemporary culture and how such narratives shape collective ideas about origin, knowledge and identity.

The repetition of the Prometheus motif reflects Tovborg’s interest in myth as a living condition rather than a fixed story. Through this process the artist seeks to inhabit the narrative itself, treating myth as an active state of participation and transformation. The works explore how symbolic images circulate through history while continuing to generate new meanings in the present.
