Nomadic Furniture 3.0 - MAK Studies 23.
Nomadic Furniture 3.0. New Liberated Living? explores the history and present state of self-built, mobile, and flexible furniture.
The starting point is the legendary Nomadic Furniture manuals by Victor Papanek and James Hennessey from the 1970s, as well as Enzo Mari’s 1974 project *Autoprogettazione*.
The publication explores the significance of DIY design today: as a critique of mass production and consumption, as an opportunity for greater self-determination, as a response to changing forms of living and working, or as a strategy for managing resources. Historical examples, theoretical contributions, and current projects are placed within a context of design history and society.
The volume combines research, documentation, and practical instructions. It showcases furniture and designs that can be understood not only as objects but as models for new ways of living, producing, and using. As MAK Studies 23, the publication continues the MAK’s exploration of design history, material culture, and contemporary modes of production.
