On the Water: Palisade Bay:
On the Water. Palisade Bay is the result of an initiative by engineers, architects, landscape architects, urban planners and students to jointly design a so-called
‘soft infrastructure’ for the bay off New York and New Jersey. To this end, infrastructures and landscapes are being developed that interlock and rethink the boundaries between water, land and city. The volume presents a novel coastal protection strategy that not only mitigates the potential damage caused by storms, but also gains new areas for recreation, ecology, agriculture and urban development. Climate change and sea level rise are catalysts for the work, while a quantitative evaluation of dynamic systems forms the basis for this new ‘soft’ infrastructure, which both enriches the environment of the urban estuary and creates a vibrant, dynamic culture on the water.
