Postkarten an Michail Gorbatschow
This artist’s book is composed of 48 double-sided, unbound cards in a compact postcard format.
The chosen form is central to the work: instead of a fixed book block, the publication consists of individual cards that can be handled separately while still forming a complete sequence. The small scale reinforces the association with private correspondence and gives the work an object-like character.
The publication uses the format of the postcard not merely as a support, but as a structural principle. Each card functions as a discrete unit of text and image. Together, the 48 cards create a serial reading experience in which the sequence remains open and physically flexible. The unbound form allows the work to be approached less as a conventional book and more as a set of related fragments.
The texts are accompanied by colour photographs, creating a dialogue between written address and visual material. The photographic component does not simply serve as illustration; it gives the publication an additional visual register and expands the relationship between message, image, and object. The result is a work positioned within the field of artists’ books, where format, material structure, typography, photography, and reading process are part of the meaning of the publication.
The very small edition of 25 copies further underlines the character of the work as a limited artist’s book rather than a mass-produced publication. Its modest dimensions, unbound construction, and postcard-based format make it a precise and intimate book object. The work combines literary text, colour photography, and graphic design in a reduced but carefully defined form.
