The book accompanying the exhibition by American artist R. H. Quaytman at the Vienna Secession condenses her monumental works into 176 pages,

successfully exploring the possibilities of the medium. The spine of the hardcover is covered with black, solid-colored paper; the front and back feature a black-and-white photograph of a fabric—in both positive and negative. A text by Elfriede Jelinek is bound into the back of the book in two booklets (German and English) on matte paper. At its core, only every fourth spread—always on glossy paper—can be opened, displaying the works in a sequence that can be associated with horizontal spatial sequences. If the hidden pages are torn along the perforation, one can leaf through a sequence of glossy and matte pages. The book thus becomes an object and demands of its readers a narrative thread that, through the act of tearing open and exposing the inner pages, subtly conveys the genius and themes of Queytman’s artistic work.
