Romanian Contemporary Art 2010–2020
Recent developments in Romanian contemporary art are discussed here less in terms of chronological contemporaneity than as a transformation of visual regimes and modes of representation.
The reconfiguration of the Romanian art scene over the past decade is linked to expanded artistic practices and shifting cultural conditions, shaped both by established figures and, increasingly, by a younger generation of artists.
Many of these artists no longer share direct experience of working under communist political structures. Their work instead addresses present-day social realities, forms of perception, and the discursive frameworks through which contemporary life is interpreted. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of technologically mediated images and their capacity to structure experience, influence perception, and participate in the construction of social reality.
By presenting twenty-nine artists, the volume outlines a heterogeneous field of practices that engage critically with visual culture, media environments, and the changing conditions of artistic production in post-socialist Europe.
