Rosa
Rare BookRosa presents the work of Austrian artist Alfredo Barsuglia (born 1980) from the past decade.
As his first monograph, the book does not function as a traditional catalogue raisonné; instead, it offers a carefully composed interplay of images and texts. Essays by various authors accompany Barsuglia’s project series and individual works, addressing not only their artistic dimensions but also the broader thematic fields they engage—including economics, ecology, sociology, and medicine. Running through the entire volume is a pink headline text that guides readers from one visual and textual constellation to the next, like passengers moving from island to island, from harbor to harbor.
The book also specifies the annual date, time, and place at which readers may meet the artist in person to receive a drawing—free of charge—on the blank spread 190–191.
The closing section (pages 198–220) is devoted to Open Mouth, a text examining the sexualized use of oral-hygiene products. It forms part of a larger artistic investigation into a previously unclassified sexual predilection termed “oderflaism.” With this focus, Open Mouth aligns with literary works such as Marquis de Sade’s The 120 Days of Sodom (1785), associated with sadism, and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s Venus in Furs (1870), associated with masochism. The publication of Rosa is expected to prompt new dictionary entries, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge about “oderflaism” and encouraging further independent research within social and sexual studies.
