Sherrie Levine – Pairs and Posses
Originality, repetition, time and materiality are key concepts for understanding the work of American conceptual artist Sherrie Levine
(born 1947 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania). She turned one of the central concepts of modernism, artistic originality, on its head by, for example, photographing Walker Evans' photographs directly from catalogues and exhibiting them.
The question of repetition and difference, copy and aura is raised anew with each of her works, yet never answered. In the field of sculpture in particular, Levine plays with a wide variety of materials and presentation strategies that both puzzle the viewer and promise aesthetic enjoyment.
The publication Pairs and Posses presents for the first time a retrospective of sculptural pairs and trios that not only refer to invisible models, but also present their respective counterparts.
