Highways are the lifelines of Europe. They carry the goods we need every day to supermarket shelves, hauled by thousands of trucks driven by hardworking drivers.

When we look up into the cabs of their gigantic vehicles, we can barely make out their heads peeking out from behind the steering wheel. Simone Demandt now finally shows us more of the heroes of the road, who posed confidently for her camera. Demandt’s strength—discovering “the intimate in the anonymous and the narrative in the sober” (Matthias Winzen)—comes into full play here. She has distilled the lived world of truck drivers into documentary black-and-white photographs in which she shows these people in their entirety and individuality—in other words, quite differently from how we perceive them on the highway. Movers lets us peer into the cabs through Demandt’s unbiased eyes, thereby broadening our horizons in a way similar to traveling, as we leave all our prejudices against truck drivers behind.
