The Future of Tradition – 100 Years after the Exhibition “Masterpieces of Muhammadan Art” in Munich was published on the occasion of the exhibition held at Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2010–2011.

The project revisited the landmark exhibition Meisterwerke muhammedanischer Kunst presented in Munich in 1910, which is regarded as one of the most influential early twentieth century presentations of Islamic art in Europe.

The catalogue examines the historical exhibition and its reception while placing it in dialogue with contemporary artistic practice. Essays by international scholars address the historiography of Islamic art, the role of exhibitions in shaping art historical narratives, and the changing perception of artistic traditions across cultures.

Alongside historical documentation of the 1910 exhibition, the publication includes numerous illustrations and contributions that reflect on the relationship between tradition and modernity. By reconsidering the legacy of the Munich exhibition, the volume explores how historical forms and cultural exchanges continue to influence contemporary artistic and scholarly discourse.
