The Inro Handbook

This publication presents a comprehensive introduction to the Japanese inrō, small multi-compartment lacquer cases traditionally worn at

the sash (obi) of men’s kimono. Combining historical overview, object analysis, and extensive photographic documentation, the book traces the development of inrō from functional personal containers to highly refined works of decorative art.

Particular attention is given to lacquer techniques, iconography, craftsmanship, and the cultural context in which these objects were produced and used. The volume remains a key English-language reference on inrō and related forms of Japanese portable ornament.
