Thomas Demand has received widespread recognition for a photographic practice that continuously shifts between reality and fiction.

His work combines photography, sculpture, and architecture, often beginning with life-size cardboard models that are meticulously constructed and then photographed. These models function as transitional structures, guiding the work from three-dimensional space into the two-dimensional image.

The photographs presented here, produced for Demand’s 2002–03 exhibition at the Castello di Rivoli in Turin, operate as ambiguous surfaces at the threshold between abstraction and detail, between material presence and visual illusion. While the images invite immediate entry through their apparent familiarity, they resist orientation. What proves challenging is not entering Demand’s images, but finding a way back out of them.
