Thomas Struth – Figure Ground

€ 68.00

From the first series, Unconscious Places (1987), to recent works addressing research and globalization, Struth’s sustained engagement with the universal themes of our time becomes clear:

questions concerning the relevance of public space, the unifying force of family cohesion, the significance of nature and culture, and the limits and possibilities of new technologies all find expression in his images in ways that are at once personal and universally resonant.

Gathered here are all the bodies of work published since 1992 in 17 Schirmer/Mosel books, up to and including the most recent series, Nature and Politics. They are complemented by early works and, for the first time, archival materials that vividly attest to Struth’s social and humanist engagement with his subjects.

Essays by the cultural critic Richard Sennett, the art historian Min-young Jeon, and Thomas Weski, curator of the Munich retrospective, accompany the individual image chapters. The richly illustrated catalogue book is designed by Fernando Gutiérrez.
