“When Home Won’t Let You Stay” explores what it means to act humanely in the early 21st century.

It focuses on experiences of flight and displacement, as well as the contradictory spectrum of human behaviour ranging from violence and indifference to helpfulness and empathy. The publication explores the social and political conditions necessary for conscious coexistence, and the relationship between the ideals of humanity and the reality of human rights.

The book brings together contributions from various artistic media, including a music video, installations, a photographic installation, an artist’s book, a documentary film, a feature film, a performance and a performative reading. It was produced in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Edited by Gerald Bast and Işın Önol.
