Yto Barrada. Guide to Trees + Guide to Fossils
A GUIDE TO TREES, Yto Barradas’s artist’s book, follows in the satirical tradition of Jonathan Swift.
It is conceived as a guide supposedly written by an anonymous, humble bureaucrat, which eagerly instructs readers on how they should prepare their city for the visit of a high-ranking guest. Whilst the instructions may seem reasonable at first glance, a closer look reveals that these patriotic Potemkin villages are a sham. A GUIDE TO FOSSILS Millions of years ago, the area now known as the Sahara was a tropical paradise. Today, the arid region between the Atlas Mountains and the desert is home to numerous traders who make a living from the laborious process of excavating, processing, forging and selling fossils from their homes. In *A Guide to Fossils*, Yto Barrada has spent years documenting this unique landscape – and the people who carry out this work – through photographs, film and artefacts.
