It is widely assumed that everyone is ‘interdisciplinary’ nowadays, that we all work at the intersections of conventional disciplines. But if being flexible, multi-skilled and polymathic are the prerequisites of survival in today’s world, why do educators and art marketeers still find it imperative to maintain conditions of production that advocate specialist outcomes?

For those who would seek to influence others, the dissemination of ideas is
paramount. Similarly, for those holding ambition to secrete knowledge for reasons of authority, or to protect the fruits of intellectual labour for reasons of profit or ethical concern, distribution is key. Certainly before, but more importantly since the Gutenberg Bible, the predicament of the power of knowledge has lain not with its generation but with the control of its dispersion.

Rural is the first release in the Continuous Tone series of sound works by visual artists. Each project is issued as a one-off heavy pressing 12-inch vinyl record with carefully designed packaging and specially commissioned sleeve notes inserted as an 10-page illustrated information booklet.
