An island is any piece of land surrounded by water. An island is an object lost in an endless extension of a uniform element. As such, the island is isolated. The island is by definition remote, separated, intimately alternative.

San Rocco is interested in gathering together the widest possible variety of contributions. San Rocco believes that architecture is a collective knowledge, and that collective knowledge is the product of a multitude.

The issue with the client is that the reasons why clients should pay for architecture (i.e., the reasons why rich or powerful individuals could become clients) seem to be disappearing.

Issue 14 of San Rocco is devoted to the theme of the island as an architectural, political, and spatial figure.

The FUNDAMENTAL ACTS propose a collective reformulation of five great themes of the human existence – LIFE, EDUCATION, CEREMONY, LOVE and DEATH – based on a palimpsest provided by Superstudio in 1972.

Minimal Art seemed harmless: just a few hard-edged, greyish pieces of metal laid on the ground, some bricks aligned a certain way, heaps of logs. Minimal Art looked unnecessarily stubborn and a bit stupid, but nobody would ever have thought it could do any harm.

There is plenty of bad architecture all over the place. Stupid, wrong architecture. Architecture that failed, and failed miserably. Architecture that is full of mistakes. (English)

If you do dare to mention beauty, then some well-intentioned idiot says “beauty is subjective”, as if this in- disputable truth (given that beauty is, of course, subjective) would implicitly mean that nothing subjective and shared (or universal, or common, or whatever you’d like to call it) could possibly exist; as if subjects could never agree, or could never admit their shared nature and recognize themselves in what, in the end, is nothing more than this: the sudden appearance of something that we all like, something to which we would all like to surrender ourselves (i.e., the sudden appearance of beauty). So, yes: beauty is subjective. But this is no reason to stop worrying about beauty.

San Rocco was the product of the collaboration of two young architects. San Rocco did not contribute to the later fame of its two designers. It is neither “standard Grassi” nor “standard Rossi”.
