Painting Behind Itself begleitet die Entwicklung zweier aktueller Werkreihen der Künstlerin Melissa Gordon, Blow Up Modernists und Material Evidence, vom Atelier zum Ausstellungsort. Die Entstehungsprozesse, Querverbindungen und das Präsentieren von Gordons Gemälden und Siebdrucken werden im Kontext ihrer Entwicklung dargestellt und im kritischen Diskurs durch einen Text von Oliver Zybok, ein Interview von Roos Gortzak mit der Künstlerin und den Essay »Malerei hinter sich« von Eva Kenny weiter beleuchtet.

PERSONA is the second magazine in a series in response to a series of meetings of female artists entitled "A conversation to know if there is a conversation to be had" held in New York, Amsterdam, Berlin and London in 2010-11.

Material Evidence expands on the formal concerns and critical debates developed through Melissa Gordon’s exhibition of the same name, following a joint residency with Spike Island and Spike Island Print Studio in Bristol, in the summer of 2013.

The trilingual exhibition publication is composed of nine chapters in one volume.
