Diese deutsche Biografie ist eine Dokumentation, die Jahr um Jahr die Ereignisse eines Lebens mit Genauigkeit archiviert. Der Hauptteil des Buches, die Chronik 1896 bis 1948, verzeichnet ein sehr großes literarisches Werk, das weit über die berühmten hinausreicht. Dei strenge Chronik der Fakten wird von einer Auswahl von Originalzitaten begleitet und durch einen reichhaltigen Anhang ergänzt.

Den Anlass für den Katalog und die gleichnamige Ausstellung bildete das 50. Jubiläum des Kunstverein Wolfsburg, in dessen Rahmen eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Geschichte und historischem Denken stattfand.

The Re-print project is a curated series that reintroduces out-of-print artist publications to a contemporary audience. The series also exploits the character of the reprints to insert interventions in public archives: introducing material that was never legally deposited, or reinserting previously archived publications in the form of mediated replications, thereby indexing the originals.

Isidor Kaufmann (1853–1921) zählt zu den wichtigsten Malern des jüdischen Genrebildes. 1899 richtet er für das vier Jahre zuvor gegründete Jüdische Museum Wien eine sogenannte „Gute Stube“ ein. Die in Israel geborene Künstlerin Maya Zack hat eine Rauminstallation geschaffen, die die zerstörte „Gute Stube“ von Isidor Kaufmann neu interpretiert.

Damit sind nur einige der theoretischen Modelle genannt, an die sich die Arbeiten von Literaturwissenschaftlern, Historikern, Arabisten und Kunsthistorikern anlehnen, die anlässlich einer Tagung am Kunsthistorischen Institut in Florenz entstanden. Die Beiträge nehmen das Meer als vermeintlich rechtsfreien Raum, die Geschichte der Piraterie und die Medien des Seekrieges genauso in den Blick, wie sie sich dem Meer als dem Reich des epischen Helden schlechthin widmen.
