Benedict is a versatile artist, who uses different media to create hybrid and complex images and installations that have been defined as “picture in the picture”. After making a name for himself in 2008 with the series Post Card – out-and-out post cards with address, scratched notes and short ironic messages, where small paintings turned into a kind of stamp –, Benedict focuses on various combinations of gouache paintings and cut-out studio portraits, glued and mounted on foam core panels and aluminum frames. Pro Choice (2010), Black Friday (2012) or Bonjour Tourist (2012), are just some examples of his unusual and hardly contextualizable compositions, that represent people, friends and models: they were asked to pose in front of paintings and photographed alone or in couples, seating behind a table or office desk, having dinner, reading the newspaper, smoking, or gazing at each other. For Carnet de miart, the artist transformed his latest effort, “Corruption Feeds” (Bergen Kunsthall, 2014—the largest and most ambitious exhibition by Benedict to date) into a screensaver for the reader to download.

In 2017 steirische herbst, one of the oldest multidisciplinary contemporary art festivals in Europe, will take place for the 50th time. Since its founding in 1968, the festival for performance art, theatre, visual arts, music, architecture, dance, literature, film and theory has been a platform for the lively debate concerning the complex social, political and economic conditions of the present.

Charakteristisch für das Werk von Frances Stark ist ein Ausloten der vielfältigen Wechselbeziehungen von Kunst und Literatur, Bild und Text. Ihre Arbeit an und mit Schrift umfasst sowohl den Bereich der bildenden Kunst wie auch das Schreiben. Wiederholt stellt sie dabei Untersuchungen zum künstlerischen Schaffensprozess und zum kreativen Akt an sich an. In ihren feinteiligen Collagen erzeugt sie Geflechte aus verschiedenen gefundenen und erfundenen Zeichen, Textschnipseln und grafischen Elementen, literarischen Zitaten und autobiografischen Referenzen.

Diese Buch kombiniert den Charakter eines Künstlerbuches mit dem einer Monographie. Die eingebundenen, gefalteten Poster basieren auf acht Farbfotografien der Künstlerin. Die beiden Motive auf Vor- und Rückseite korrespondieren miteinander und verleihen dem Buch einen spielerischen Aspekt.

A-Z/ A=A (s. Identität) kreist um Bilder als Denkfiguren, die Theorien transportieren und Begriffsfelder konstruieren. 136 Bildtafeln versammeln Motive verschiedenartiger Herkunft zu Konstellationen, die auf Momente von Wiederholung, Assoziation, Vergleich, Repräsentation und Referenz bauen und die die Wandelbarkeit der Lesart eines einzelnen Bildes in Abhängigkeit von seinem jeweiligen Kontext demonstrieren. Gegliedert wird das Buch durch 180 Begriffe, die am Kopf jeder Seite stehen und die auf separaten alphabetisch geordneten Seiten erläutert werden. Die Begriffe werden nicht allgemeingültig definiert – vielmehr wird der Versuch unternommen, die Begriffe durch die Kombination einzelner möglicher Bedeutungsaspekte neu zu konzipieren.
